Welcome to Labyrinth [No. 9]! This artwork was created for Jersey City and is the original design of local artist Katelyn Halpern. Enjoy it freshly re-installed for 2026! To enjoy the labyrinth in a traditional way, walk the path starting at the mouth, follow it to the center, and then follow it back out. Unlike mazes, labyrinths are a single twisting pathway without dead ends, forks, or tricks. There are no choices to make – simply things to notice. You may give yourself over to the path and release your mind to its wanderings, or perhaps carry with you a question, idea, or feeling, and watch how it changes as you move along.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Katelyn Halpern (she/they) is a multidisciplinary artist from Austin, Texas living in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Trained as a dancer and writer and self-taught in other media, she works in installations, performance, visual art, and the written word on subjects of peace/not peace, intimate relationship, space dust, and possibility-freedom-futures, and always the experience of moving through the world in a feminine body.
Hailed as a “compelling conceptual artist,” “mischief maker,” and “born searcher,” (Jersey City Times), she is the founding artistic director of SMUSH Gallery, an art space dedicated to creative and community work in Jersey City.
When she’s not making art or tending to SMUSH, she works as a freelance grant writer and art-life consultant, does people’s taxes, and digs in the garden with her family.
