Stephanie Guillen
About This Work
I discovered my love for creative expression through painting as a child and have nurtured it into a lifelong passion. Today, I create mixed media analog collages on canvas, wood, and paper, layering my own photographs with art papers, cut-outs, and painted elements. Each piece is one of a kind, sometimes reusing elements to reflect an interconnected artistic universe.
Inspired by nature, travel, urban decay, and a fascination with the old and mystical, I occasionally incorporate vintage postcards, family photographs, and documents. Recently, I have expanded my practice by experimenting with mixed media sculpture and returning to photography as an artistic medium.
My work reveals surreal, dreamlike worlds with a nostalgic tone, shaped by a desire for stillness and an attraction to the eerie and unknown—places where mystery lingers, stories are retold, and the forgotten is remembered.
Artist Bio
Stephanie Guillen is a Swiss-born visual artist whose work moves between photography and mixed media collage, weaving together fragments of memory, place, and imagination. Raised in Bern, a UNESCO World Heritage city, she developed an early fascination with history, old structures, and untold stories, influences that continue to shape her artistic voice. A self-taught artist, Guillen began with abstract painting before expanding into photography after moving to the United States in 2007. Drawn to abandoned spaces, cemeteries, and overlooked landscapes, she creates atmospheric images that explore the fragile boundary between presence and absence. She often transforms her photographs into mixed media works on canvas, paper, wood, and other materials, embracing experimentation to discover new forms of expression. Through layered textures and imagery, her work reflects the passage of time, memory, and hidden narratives, inviting viewers into quiet spaces of contemplation. Guillen's work has been exhibited in galleries and art events throughout the United States and internationally, including London, Zurich, Stockholm, and Budapest. She currently lives and works in Parsippany, New Jersey.
