About This Work

This work is a reclamation of body and spirit. Part of a series called Violent Fruit, I am using my body to meditate on the violence that plagues my feminine existence. I am subject to night terrors due to complex post traumatic stress. Consumption is a common topic, as I fear returning to a loss of self. While consuming the flesh of another object, I meditate over the violence that is necessary for sustenance. What I choose to eat becomes part of who I am. The fruit is a metaphor for the violence I have experienced. By using my own body to exhibit dominance over what I consume at a large scale, it feels like an assertion of self in space. The edges of the solid background, representing the void in between thoughts, are burned to allow space for turmoil to exist, just as the memories are not bound by a box but rather our bodies. The edges of the work are determined by controlled fire, asserting dominance over chaos.
