About This Work

Curly Girl draws from the boundless energy of young girls. Rendered in layered purples and accented with bright pink and yellow, its curving lines evoke coils of textured Black hair while tracing forms that register, unmistakably, as girlhood itself.

Artist Bio

Born in 1989 in Houston, Texas, and raised in Lithonia, Georgia, Michael Hines is an Emmy Award–winning motion designer whose work has appeared in nationally broadcast live sports and news. He earned a BFA in Motion Media Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2011, and while working in New York continued his studies at the Art Students League and the Grand Central Atelier. Hines' abstract paintings engage a lineage shaped by the geometric discipline of William T. Williams, the architectural clarity of Piet Mondrian, and the legacy of color-field painting. He constructs a visual language in which contours and margins act as structural elements — fixed boundaries that remain active and charged, registering movement and tension within the painted field. Continuous lines extend to the canvas edge, generating momentum and resisting closure. Meaning emerges gradually, through repetition, interruption, and accumulation. Hidden narratives surface in ways that recall the logic of logos and branded systems of modernity, while margins carry social and historical weight, indexing the Black American experience of displacement. Across these layered compositions, color operates as both material and metaphor, and identity is articulated not as a fixed condition but as an evolving process.
