About This Work

Lost Histories Upheld in Spirit references protective spirits as quiet guardians who carry histories across generations, preserving stories that have been forgotten, erased, or left untold. Rather than depicting these figures directly, the painting invites viewers to sense their presence. Knowing that Jersey City was one of the stops on the Underground Railroad adds an additional significance in this exploration of past, present and future.

Also submitted: Exhale – A short video performance which captures the artist seated within the installation she constructed by hand for the Safe Passage film series.
Built in Jersey City during COVID in the aftermath of a heavy storm. Flowing fabric, representing water, surrounds and creates a space that offers the possibility of healing. By placing herself within the installation, Williams becomes both witness and participant.
