This body of work is inspired by Tunantada, a traditional music and dance festival from Jauja, Junín, Peru. Through portraits, landscapes, and studies of festival masks, the series reflects on identity, memory, and the relationship between people and place.
The contrast between Andean faces and the masks worn during the celebration became the starting point for exploring how tradition, performance, and history shape cultural identity.

Artist Bio
Sofía Carrasco is a Peruvian visual artist, tenor saxophonist, and composer based in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her interdisciplinary practice explores the human experience through drawing, painting, and music, focusing on identity, memory, movement, and cultural traditions. Her visual work is grounded in drawing, using line, gesture, and facial expression to examine the body as a reflection of lived experience. Recent work has been inspired by the Tunantada of Jauja, Peru, where portraits, masks, and landscapes become a way to explore the relationship between people, place, and collective memory. Music is an essential part of her artistic practice. Rather than existing separately, sound and image develop in dialogue, sharing rhythm, movement, and emotional intensity. Carrasco has exhibited her work in Peru and New Jersey through solo and group exhibitions and continues to create interdisciplinary projects that bring together visual art and original music.
